Stay warm when you're fishing in the cold.

Stay Warm When You’re Fishing In The Cold

Avid fishermen just can’t get enough. Believe me, it takes one to know one!

It doesn’t matter if the weather is nice or if it’s absolutely freezing cold. We still need to get out on the water and try to land the big ones. However, whether you’re just hitting the stream in the cold or you’re heading on an ice fishing expedition it’s imperative that you take the proper precautions so that you don’t run into trouble with the low temperatures of the elements.

Hypothermia is a serious thing, and it’s not something you even want to risk when you’re fishing in the cold. If you ever got hurt you could quickly go from comfortable to freezing, and in bad situations that could result in the loss of a limb or worse – the loss of a life. We all sacrifice a lot for fishing, but we don’t want to do anything that would bring our ability to fish another day into jeopardy.

Hypothermia is a serious thing, and it’s not something you even want to risk when you’re fishing in the cold.

It goes without saying that proper preparation is key if you’re going to be fishing in the cold weather. Of course, if you’re ice fishing in a hut you may be a little better off, as there are plenty of ways to keep your shed warm cheaply.

ice fishing huts.
Ice fishing huts are nice to have, but not everyone has one.

However, assuming you don’t have a shed to count on, try to wear plenty of layers as this will keep you from feeling bulky with a heavy coat. As fishermen we have to be fairly mobile and nimble. You’re best off going with more layers of thinner clothing for increased mobility. On the plus side, if you end up overheating you can always remove a layer or two so you can feel just right.

Waterproofing is essential to fishing in the cold weather as well. As soon as your clothes get wet, you’re toast. Think ahead and bring waders, waterproof boots, and a poncho to cover your torso. It may seem like overkill, but when you’re nice and dry when the world around you gets wet, you’ll be happy you came prepared.

Don’t be a dummy and go without a hat or a nice set of gloves either. Keeping your extremities warm is just as important as the rest of your body. Even though we need to work with our hands when fishing, it’s important to keep our fingers covered or they’ll be the first to freeze in the chilling wind.

Aside from dressing for the occasion, it’s a good idea to pack for the occasion with plenty of things to keep you comfort level high. Keep a pack of hand warmers in your bag, they have a long expiration date and they can be life savers in a pinch. Bring along a thermos with your favorite warm beverage for when the chill starts to set in to your bones. I can’t advocate drinking alcohol while fishing in potentially dangerous situations (encourage you to be smart when you’re in such situations), but legend has it that a flask of whisky helps make the body feel warm from the inside.

How To Cast A Fishing Rod

If you are looking for a sport that is with nature and quiet, fishing is the choice. It is the activity that is not only about catching fish, but it also requires a lot of patience. You will have to wait for the fish to bite to your bait and then you will try to successfully pull it which at times takes luck. For you to have the bigger chances of success, you should know the proper procedure. From properly tying the hook on the line to having the right bait and of course, to cast a rod which is one of the crucial parts.

What is casting a rod and how is it crucial? It is the motion that you use to launch your lure or bait into the water where you want it to go using your fishing rod. It is crucial because a good technique for casting will at times determine a good catch. A good casting will take your rod far deeper where bigger fishes usually swim.

Before you cast, there are some things you need to do and learn. First will be how you will properly hold and grip your rod. Always have it in your stronger hand. Have the reel oriented so the it hangs down from the rod and grip it such that the base of the reel where it meets the rod rests comfortably between your fingers. If it is more comfortable for you to have them placed with your particular fingers, you could do that. Reel in your line or let some out as needed so that there is about a foot of length between your hook and the rod tip. Crank the reel slowly until the line winder is inline with your index finger, then use your index finger to hook around the line and hold it against the rod.

Now it is time for casting. Here are the steps you will need to follow:

  1. Identify where you would throw the line.
  2. After identifying it, it is time to cast it there. Bring the rod upright so that it is in line with your body.
  3. Gently lower the rod backwards and look where you want to cast your line.
  4. When you get all the way back, swing the rod forward, trying to maintain some of the momentum. You should feel the rod flexing a bit if you’re doing it right.
  5. As the rod tip comes over your should release the line from your index finger.
  6. In doing all these things, timing is the key. If you cast and the line goes up directly into the air, then you almost certainly let go with your index finger too soo. On the other hand, if the lure ends up at your feet then you probably released too late. A good way to make sure your timing is right is to swing the fishing rod forward and as your casting arm reaches out, and point your pointer finger straight towards your target. This typically results in the line releasing at just the right moment.
  7. Proper control is also significant, and the key to this is to properly grip the rod. It is said that the strength should be the same as giving a firm handshake.

How To Cook Fish In The Oven

One of the greatest prizes, when you catch a fish, is getting to eat them. Sure, having the peace and quiet while fishing is nice, but getting to taste your own hard work is really nice. There are many ways you can cook fish. You could also find a lot of recipes from recipe books, magazines, and the internet. Cooking a fish through an oven is one of the ways. It is also healthier since you will not need to use a lot of oil. There are two ways to cook fish in the oven, and that is to broil them and to bake them.

Broiling is similar to grilling. It is actually an alternative to grilling and can use the same recipes. The difference is that grilling’s heat source is from below like in a barbecue grill while broiling, on the other hand, has its heat source from above. But like grilling, you would need to always check your cooking because it cooks one side at a time would require turning them over.

The best fish to broil are those that have high levels of natural oil. Examples of this are mackerel and salmon. The reason for this is because the natural oil protects them from the heat and will cook beautifully. You could still broil fish that are moderately lean but needed to be brushed with protective glaze or oil. Fish that are very lean and delicate are hard to broil though, so it would be wise to avoid it.

For you to successfully broil your fish, here are some tips:

  1. Always preheat the broiler or oven before putting in the fish.
  2. Season the fish with a dry rub for better flavor.
  3. Place your fish on a foil and rub it with protective glaze or olive oil.
  4. When broiling the fish, always check it to prevent burning or overcooking. Remember that it requires turning them over to cook both sides.
  5. When it is done, remove them from the oven but leave it in the foil and let it rest.
  6. Then plate it and serve.

Baking is preparing food in dry heat. Unlike broiling that needed to be watched upon, baking does not for lower temperature is used. It does need to be timed but the fish does not need to be turned over.

You can bake a fish whole or fillet. It does have to be at a certain temperature to preserve moisture and delicate texture.

Here are some tips for baking a fish:

  1. Preheat the oven before putting in the fish.
  2. Always have your fish dried by patting it with paper towels. This is to avoid splattering.
  3. For them to cook equally, their thickness should be equal.
  4. Brush the fish with oil, butter, or pesto for it to stay moist.
  5. Season the fish with salt, pepper, and your desired spices.
  6. Fish bake at different lengths and will depend on your fish’s thickness and type. Fillets cook for 4 to 6 minutes per half-inch thickness of fish. Pan-dressed fish cook for 6 to 9 minutes per 8 ounces of fish.
  7. To test if the fish is done, gently try to flake it apart with a fork. If should come apart very easily. If it sticks together it’s probably still raw, and you can usually notice a difference in color and opacity as well.

Types of Edible Fish

Fishing is one of those hobbies that is fulfilling. There are people who fish competitively then there are those who fish for them to eat. There are also those who fall in between. They do not really fish as a competition but had to catch something that is rewarding and what they will eat is such a prize because it is from their own hard work. But first things first, what is the best fish to fry? There are many kinds out there, and all of them can be fried in some ways, but the best ones would be fish that are lean. Examples of this are trout, tilapia, cod, etc. Basically, fish with white meat is good for frying. Fish with higher oil content are better off for broiling or baking because they tend to get greasy and unappealing.

The next question would be what will be the best oil to use? The best oil to fry with is those that are not flavored because fish already has a strong flavor and the flavor of the oil will just disappear when used. You can still use them for fish after cooking. Frying is done in two ways. One is pan-frying or shallow frying, and the other is deep-frying. Using oils with high smoking points is more applicable for it will be not ruined with high heat. Canola and vegetable oils are the best choices for this especially that they are also neutral-flavored.

The next will be frying the fish. It is simple but does require some skill. But just learn these steps and you may be expert on frying fish in no time.

To add more texture and body to your fish, have them coated. You can simply dredge them in flour or breadcrumbs or make a batter.

3. Prepare pan

Before you fry your fish, always have the pan prepared. You will know it is ready by dipping a wooden spoon into the oil, and it starts bubbling.

4. Fry the fish

Now, it is time to fry the fish. Deep frying is simpler. You will just put them in a deep fryer then simply wait for a few minutes to be cooked. Pan-frying will take more time. You will put the fish on the pan then wait until it is golden brown for a few minutes then flip them over to cook the other side. To test if they are ready, have a fork and see if it flakes and if it does, then it is ready. Transfer them in a plate with paper towels to get rid of the excess oil.

5. Serve

Put them in a plate with lemon wedges and other garnish, and then you can add in with your favorite sauce. Now it is ready for you to serve it.

How To Go Fishing

With our busy lives, we tend to get easily tired and seem to have no time for leisure. Sure we can take a rest and have gadgets to entertain us, but does it really work for you? It is said that for us to truly relax and clear our mind is to go out and see nature. That is because going out or even just seeing nature reduces our stress. So why not have a hobby or just try something that involves going out. It can be just by yourself or have a companion for you to bond with. One of those is fishing. Fishing is not only is relaxing it is also fulfilling once you do catch one. But it is not that simple. What to do and how to start?

1. Knowing the Rules

First things first. You should know about the rules and regulations about fishing. For the protection of both the sport and environment, you would need to have a license for fishing. If you do have a child under 16 that you would like to accompany you, it is not necessary for them to have one.

2. Choosing a Fishing Spot

Now that you have the license and permit, it is time for you to find a place. It will depend on where you live. There might ponds and lakes near you that you will be comfortable to stay for a long time. If you live near the coast, you could also try fishing at saltwater.

3. Owning a Fishing Gear

Like other sports, fishing requires equipment. For angling, you would need a fishing rod and reel. For a beginner, it is recommended to use those that are simple. Equipment stores will surely know what they would recommend to you about that. Hooks are also important to what kind of fish you would prefer to catch. Another significant thing you need to select is the bait. There are many kinds of them and the most effective would be the ones they would really eat like works and insects. If you are not fond of them though, you could always use a synthetic one that will lure the fish. Another most common alternative is bread. Another thing you would need is something when you already caught one and that is a cage or cooler where you can put and keep your fish.

4. Catching Fish

Now it is time for you to do the main deed and that is catching a fish. First, you would need to know how to set up and use your rod. First would be tying a hook on the line. Then for you to easier spotting fish, you can tie weights and bobbers above the hook. Then, of course, to lure a fish, you will need the bait hooked. After that, cast your line by pulling back and throwing the hook forward. Then you will patiently for the fish to bite which takes long. When a fish bites, set the hook by raising the pole. Pull up the line and firmly lift the pole hoping that you would lift the fish out of the water. And once you caught it, put it on the cage or cooler.
