Types of Edible Fish

Fishing is one of those hobbies that is fulfilling. There are people who fish competitively then there are those who fish for them to eat. There are also those who fall in between. They do not really fish as a competition but had to catch something that is rewarding and what they will eat is such a prize because it is from their own hard work. Not all fish are edible though whether they are from saltwater or freshwater, so it is important to gain knowledge of what they are because the one you caught might be poisonous. What are those fish that are edible? There are a lot of them but these are the most popular and common:

1. Salmon

Salmon are anadromous fish meaning they live in both freshwater and saltwater. They are consumed by many because they are rich in protein, omega 3 fatty acids, and high vitamin D. But because of its oily nature, it is also rich in cholesterol. It is better to consume wild-caught salmon for they have higher levels of nutrients and has less saturated fat.

2. Trout

One of the most common fish to catch that are usually found in cool, clear streams, ponds, or lakes. They are rich in protein and vitamin B-12

3. Halibut

If you’ve not had halibut before, it’s a delicious white fish with an excellent texture. Although, because of overfishing, halibut from the Atlantic might be declared as endangered species and avoid catching them. That is why it is more advisable to catch them from the Pacific instead.

4. Tuna

Tuna is a saltwater fish. It is needed to be eaten in moderation especially for some that contain more mercury. Tuna is low in calories and high in vitamins and protein. Be aware that some tuna are overfished, so be knowledgable and get those that are not.

5. Mackerel

A fish that is found in both temperate and tropical seas. They are rich in omega 3 and vitamin B-12. Larger varieties tend to have higher levels of mercury that is why it is advised to consume the smaller varieties.

6. Cod

Another saltwater fish and a good source of nutrients. It is a delicious white fish that can be baked, fried, steamed, you name it. It is also an ideal food for those who want to lose weight because it is low in fat and calories yet high in protein.

7. Walleye

It is a freshwater fish that is an excellent source of protein and omega 3.

8. Sardines

An oily fish that offers a lot of nutrients. They are great because they are often packed in cans and not only will last virtually forever, they can be packed very densely for travel.

9. Herring

You may be surprised to hear that herring and sardines belong to the same family of fish. It was certainly news to me. It is a great source of omega 3 and fatty acids. It is also rich in protein and vitamin B-12.

10. Bass

Bass has many kinds that may be found in either freshwater or saltwater. They are high in protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Bass is also a well-known sport fish which means some catch them for a prize at fishing competitions.

Types of Fresh Water Fish

Fishing is an activity that is relaxing and clears your mind. If you also want something quiet, this will be it and add to that, you will be with nature. While it does require patience because having a fish to lure and bite your bait will take a while, it is certainly fulfilling especially if you are looking for something to catch for lunch or dinner.

Wherever you live, there will surely be a freshwater body near you. They are ponds, rivers, lakes, and streams. Even if you live in a coastal area, there will still a pond or stream near. Freshwater has a variety of fish in them and it would be nice to give them a try. What are the types of fish that you can catch and eat? Here are some of the most popular:

They are tasty especially if they from clear, cold and clean water. They are large and flaky, so they are often filleted but can be still cooked in different ways.
